Photo Friday

It’s been a busy week around here. I have lots of pictures to share, but I thought it would be good to first show a glimpse of what Sundays can look like for us.

This past Sunday, we attended church at Ufeto, which is on the other side of Goroka, where four different churches joined together for a special Communion service. We very much enjoyed our time with our brothers and sisters in Christ, but this was an extra special day for us because it was the first time we have been part of a Communion service since moving to Papua New Guinea.

When we arrived at the church, several ladies were working on making food to sell after the service. These are called “karamap.” Greens, ginger, garlic, and pork are wrapped in a large edible leaf, tied with bush rope, then boiled in a large pot. They were very good!

This is a large pile of finished karamaps. All of them were sold after church to raise money for the women’s ministry.

One of the pastors’ wives arrived and greeted us. It is customary in our area of Papua New Guinea to acknowledge everyone in the group with at least a handshake.

This little boy was interested in what was going on in the church building, but the great outdoors eventually won out.

All the children were called up to the front to sing a song for the congregation.

Pastors Moses and Gibson look on as their congregations spend time in fellowship with one another.

This is the Papa of the land where the church was built. He wanted me to take his picture so his children and grandchildren will remember him when he dies.

The pastors’ wives are always very sweet and welcoming to this very awkward foreigner.
